Loire Valley: study post for nerds

In Uncategorized on May 6, 2012 at 6:50 pm

Owing to a favorable climate, and the region’s proximity to Paris, the Loire has been an important winegrowing region for centuries. Winemaking in the Loire can be traced back to at least the 1st century CE, however the grape varieties most associated with the area today came some time later; Chenin Blanc in the 9th Century, Cabernet Franc in the 11th, and Sauvignon Blanc by the middle ages. As was the rest of France, the Loire was hit hard by Phylloxera, and was nearly forgotten, and the wines are still tremendously under-valued. Today the Loire produces more white wine than any other region in France, and is second only to Champagne in sparkling wine production.

The Loire is divided into 4 major regions from west to east; the Pays Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine, and the Central Vineyards.  (Please, Ask Sam To Come Visit)
