Not that I was surprised to like these wines, because I’ve generally liked the wines from these two producers, but it was my first time tasting these two, and I really liked both of them. I tasted the 07 Waters Columbia Valley Syrah first. It’s got a beautiful, elegant, fruit-driven nose of bright red fruit, and just a little bit of black pepper and cocoa powder. The fruit is reflected in the palate, which is fruity without being sweet or over-extracted, with very subtle spice, and a long finish with bright, refreshing acidity.
Next was the 08 Trust Walla Walla Syrah. The difference was immediately apparent in the nose, the Trust shows much darker berry fruit, spice, subtle smoked meat, rosemary, and licorice. Tart black fruit like wild blackberries on the palate, with a bit of black pepper and firm structure. Like the Waters, a great, long finish with excellet acidity.
